A separate MLS stadium would be completely unnecessary. MLS teams are distributed among metro areas that are at least twice as large, and the best of them typically get attendances of 16000, with sub-10k attendance being not unheard of.
University Stadium, well-suited to a soccer match, can seat in excess of 35000 fans. It sits idle much of the time.
The new APS westside stadium would probably not get filled by an MLS match's attendance.
The city of Miami was not able to maintain an MLS team due to sub-10000 attendance.
Even if fans were clamoring for a new stadium, downtown would be the worst possible place to build it; simply for land use, land cost, and congestion reasons. We already pay plenty in property taxes and rents to keep up our other compatible facilities.
MLS wants soccer specific stadiums, not stadiums with running tracks or are used by football teams too. I dont think an MLS team would make it in ABQ, where would they even get the franchise fees for it. It cost $100 million for Man City to buy NYCFC.
The last team Miami had in MLS wasnt actually in Miami so you cant hold that against them. The new Miami team will be based in Miami.
I'm am all for this! I remember when the Tennessee Titans (Houston Oilers) came to Nashville. They didn't even have a stadium and was playing in Memphis. Memphis then and now had a larger population than Nashville, but Nashville got an NFL team. No on in Nashville felt the city could afford a stadium or had the population to support the NFL. Then BOOM! The NHL also wanted to come to Nashville (Predators) to fill their arena. The city then had two pro sport franchises back to back. To say we don't have the money or population is not always true as Nashville back then was smaller than ABQ is today. Also Columbus OH built one of the first Soccer Specific Stadiums and got a team in the late 90's. Columbus had a similar population to ABQ back then. Soccer doesn't require as much disposable income as NFL, NHL, or NBA as the ticket prices are usually cheaper. Also their facilities are also much cheaper to build than any of the others...typically.
