I've recently learned that my family will be moving to Albuquerque in January 2013.
I'd like to know what the computer science fields are like down there, and how well UNM is in those fields.
I'm currently considering the University of Washington in Seattle, but maybe UNM is just as good? I know Intel is in Albuquerque, but other than that, I'm not sure how big the technology field is down there in New Mexico.
Thank you for your help, and I await your replies!
I'll be moving to ABQ in December/January, from Lincoln Nebraska.
I'm really into Computer Programming, and A.I., and was wondering how big the technology field is in New Mexico. It's non-existent here in Nebraska, so I'm hoping its better in NM. I think Intel is in ABQ, right?
UNM does a lot with AI, A-Life and Natural Language processing, there are several different companies/spinoffs based on their technology.
There is Intel (in Rio Rancho), but more importantly there is Sandia National Labs and Kirtland Air force Base which eat up and train a lot of computer scientist. Then there are all the defense contractors and research companies that support them.
Its far from Silicon Valley, but it is also far from non-existent. If you like programming and AI you could find plenty of things to interest you, as well as possible careers if you have a degree (and a place to get one if you don't).

I really do not know how big the technology field is in New Mexico. The whole state is only a population of about 2 million... There are a lot of small companies involved in various technical fields, but I really am not acquainted with the job market.
Technically, Intel is in Rio Rancho, just a few miles from Albuquerque.
Bill Gates started in ABQ.

Technically, Intel is in neither, is in Sandoval County, is outside of Rio Rancho and outside of Albuquerque and outside of Corrales. Intel directly pays no city taxes as a result. Intel located there because of significant tax incentives offered by Sandoval County (including ability to operate outside a city that assesses taxes).
Intel's property touches Albuquerque at the corner of NM 528 & Westside Blvd.
