Hey guys,

Is there a place in Albuquerque you can recommend to buy some high-quality large steaks? I'm talking about 32-40 oz huge delicious steaks made out of pure heaven, and like 1 inch thick! I tried looking at the normal stores like Albertson's, Smiths, etc, but their steaks got much thinner lately and are very small.

Someone told me today to check Keller's, but I thought I would ask and see if anyone has any more suggestions.

Thanks in advance!

I am certainly no steak expert but Keller's Farms and Whole Paycheck (Foods) claim humane practices. You might also want to look at Sunflower Markets. I cannot even imagine the orientation of Smith's or Alberson's in that regard.

One problem at Smith's is that they no longer cut any meats in the stores, according to one of the white coat guys. (Can't really call him a butcher if he isn't cutting meat, right?) He told me all their meat is now pre-cut "at the warehouse", whatever that means, at the stores they only package it for sale.

Our Edgewood Wal-Mart has some gorgeous steaks, aged Prime and all that. The prices put me off so I can't comment on the quality, but they sure look good.

We watch for whole or partial beef tenderloins to go on sale, then cut our own steaks from them. If you like rib eyes, that might work for you ... We haven't been to Keller's yet, would like to hear about their selection if you go.

A drive out to Amarillo to the Big Texan might work for you.

You can always buy from a beef rancher. My folks used to buy a calf and butcher it themselves or, if they didn't have time, have it done at a meat plant.

I will echo recommendations for Kellers. It's the best. Once you start buying your meat there, it will be very hard to go back to buying it from grocery stores. They will also cut any size of any cut that you want right there in the store.

The problem here is that if you have a 1 inch steak, it is doubtful that it will be even close to 32-40oz. Perhaps you should decide whether you want the steak to weigh that much OR be 1 inch thick before you go do more shopping. That being said, go to keller's. They will either cut them for you, or you can at least pick the ones you want from the case. I see no reason to go to a place where they force you to buy what they choose to package together.

Forgive me for forgetting the name, I've been gone from ABQ for a few years now. When I would buy meat that I needed for special occasions I went to a butcher/supermarket in the plaza at Eubank and Candelaria, southeast corner. I was impressed every single time! It may have been Keller's as a earlier poster mentioned I believe.
