If I look on Google Maps, it looks like when they took the satellite view, the paved portion ended at Elena Drive. Is that still the case?

Louisiana ends at the North end at Elena.
Elena ends at the West end at Louisiana.

There is a ( slightly more than ) right angle in the road there.

You can park and hop a fence if you want to go West from
there. If you hop the fence going very far North, you will
be tresspassing on the Sandia Indian Reservation.

go to Bing Maps
( type in 87113 and use [Bird's Eye] View after navigating from there to see more detail )

That Louisiana and Elena intersection is the end of one of the runways from recently (5 years ago?) decommisioned/closed Coronado Airstrip (?) which was owned by Indians, not sure what tribe but they do not like people trespassing there. We were told they were going to build housing there.

The Bing maps Bird's Eye view I referenced really shows that.
As a matter of fact, the intersection cuts right into the old
runway path. From the road, it really isn't visible at all.

I ride my bike through there practically weekly and had no
clue till I used the Bird's Eye view and it jumped right out.

I remember the airport from the early 70s. A civilian F-5 photo recon version of the WW2
P-38 Lightning was based there, I assume for photo mapping pre-satellite..

Hmmm, Google maps shows Louisiana going North, crossing Elena then turning West then and joining Elena which has turned North:

Mike is right, that was the Coronado Airport which was owned by Sandia Pueblo.

It was closed in 2002, I think, when new operating regs were mandated by the Feds as a result of 9/11/01. Sandia said it would cost too much to implement the new regs, so they shut it down.

I had used the strip a few times in the 80's flying out from Arizona, and a few other times. It was not always operated/owned by the Pueblo. Later I had attended some of the meetings regarding the closing, at that time the Tribal leaders said they were closing the airport because of some drainage problems and safety. That was after they initially announced the land was going to be developed. It was also announced that they were they were not interested in any aircraft, to include model aircraft using the facility any longer, and probably 50+ aircraft owners were shuffling trying to find places to hangar their planes. I do not recall 9/11 being an issue, I really don't remember if these meetings were before or after 9/11.

Thanks. I was hoping to find a shortcut though there for some visiting friends, but I guess the freeway will be okay.
