exupstateny, you got it! I don't remember all the exact exit numbers but from Route 7 going South 787 is an Interstate (passing Waterveliet & Menands). I'm not talking about using the State 787 section through almost downtown Cohoes, I know that has lights. I don't remember if I-787 keeps it's name after passing downtown Albany but I remember going straight onto the Thruway (I-87 South) to NYC after passing through a tollbooth.
I know the State 787 section from the Green Island turn to Cohoes is a nightmare at times, hell the exit with Route 7 (or Alt 7, whichever name is right) is a deathtrap. That cloverleaf there is way outdated.
Exit 23 from the Thruway (still 87 at that point) can lead you right on to 787 North and if you take exit 9W (Alternate 7) from 787 to the Northway it doesn't involve any traffic lights. Either way (Exit 23 or Exit 24) you go during rush hour is going to be busy. Personally, I preferred the Exit 23 route when I lived up there because I hated Exit 24.
So you want to take out a highway that is already a parking lot during rush hour and many weekends. Where would you put that traffic? Your suggestion also adds MILES to a trip! If you're in Saratoga or Warren County, this proposal is a nightmare. The Northway is already in existence where it meets 90 so why get rid of it? That makes no sense whatsoever. The Thruway already can't handle the traffic it has. Notice they're expanding exits 24 to 23 to 3 lanes?

Where did I say anything about taking out a highway? You might want to re-read my post. And I didn't suggest anything, I just said I preferred to go a different way. I also did Google Map directions of both routes from where the Thruway meets 787 to Northway Exit 7 and they are exactly 13.7 miles each.
