My friend and I are Physical Therapy students in South Georgia. We are pulling to do our clinicals in Alaska because this is a chance of a lifetime to go where we've always wanted to go. The big question is..Juneau or Fairbanks? I have never seen snow, it's hot and humid here..so which is the coldest? Please educate me. I know that it is beautiful there but Ive never been in temps below 32 degrees. Oh yea the months will be Sept. 28-Nov.9

It will be cold and humid during that time in Juneau. You will get snow and you will also get rain. It might be more rain than snow during that time period.

Fairbanks will be cold and a lot dryer. You will definetely get some cold weather by Nov 9. At least by your standards it will be cold. It will likely be below 32 for at least 1/2 of that time. I wouldn't be surprised that it gets below zero in November.

Huge contrasts between these locations. Juneau, the State Capital, is on the water, very wet and temperate. It's actually in a rain forest. It has some cultural activities, there's downhill skiing and lots of maritime possibilities. You'll see rain, snow, mixed rain and snow and wind. Fairbanks is much larger, spread out and cold and dry. It gets 50-60 below in the winter. It's nice in the summer, but it's winter driving conditions from here on out. You didn't mention housing but my guess is Juneau is higher. Both places will be expensive for heating.
I would personally choose Juneau, but I would also consider which place has a better clinical program. I mean, you guys are going to be studying all the time anyway, right?

50-60 BELOW ZERO?????? OH MY GOODNESS. That's cold. We ain't gona have a whole lot of studying to do we will just be doing hands on training so after the shift is over it will be free time for us. I suppose we are going to be staying in a hotel for the 6 weeks we are there. Are there like taxi's and such there that can take us to places? I don't know it's a hard choice since we don't know anything about either city.

Taxis are available in both cities. Fairbanks is a little cheaper on hotels and in winter you can get a suite for under a hundred a day. Probably cheaper in an extended stay hotel/motel. Juneau is actually a little more spread than Fairbanks proper, a smaller community population wise. Beautiful scenery there. Fairbanks has some hills, but a larger younger population due to the university there.

You won't get the 50-60 below during the time you are there. But you will probably get some below 0 temps.

Personally, I would go to Fairbanks. You can take a lot of side trips from there on weekends. In Juneau you are stuck, no roads in or out. You need to fly or take the ferry...and it's a long ferry trip.

Visit Fairbanks, then when you return you can tell your friends you were in the real cold! Also there is plenty of things to do and the University is not far away with buses and taxis. Don't forget to get pictures of North Pole, AK and visit Chena Hot Springs. Goggle them. Temp here in Fairbanks now is about 25 to 38 right now. light snow just falling. Your time line will be right at the end of Fall. If you can spring to arrive early Sept, you could still visit Denali National Park. Most of the Park closes on the 15th of September.

Wow.. Ya'll sold me on Fairbanks when you said there was only the fairy ride in or out. What time zone is it there? We are Eastern Standard Time. I am sooo excited, I can hardley wait to become a human popsicle. I can't wait to see real live snow. I wish I could take my kids. Thanks for all your comments..please keep em coming.
