Looking at the Bethel City Code, it looks like if the rental is for less than 42 days, there's a 12% lodging tax.

This is a long term rental. Permanent living quarters. I looked at the code and it seems the 6% sales tax does apply which just seems crazy to me. I've never dealt with that before. Usually sales tax applies to buying things not an apartment or house rental. Wow.

That's life. When I had my rentals in Ketchikan we had to collect sales tax. It's how cities pay for stuff.

Yup....and it's not limited to AK. My son had to pay sales tax on his rental in Honolulu.

Sales tax on rent does seem a bit "un-Alaskan"
. I agree that it seems petty but they have to pay for those cush city jobs somehow.
Is your husband a senior citizen? At least it looks like they give seniors a break on this
