Hello again all,

Okay, I most likely know the answer to this quetion, but I am going to ask it anyway.
(Just silly like that I guess...)
Here goes-

A friend of mine wants to trade in his 2003 Jeep Wrangler on a new car- and is only being offered $4000 for it by the dealer.
It has low miles and he was a fanatic about maintenance.
I know, insanely lowball offer, but that's what he is being offered.

He offered to sell it to me at the same price.
Of course, I could buy it and turn a profit, but I really don't want to bother with all that.
The question is, will this vehicle work out in SW Alaska?
I mean, I know it will run, but is it practical?
It has 4wd but only has a soft top.
The shipping rates are much cheaper for this than my Suburban, but am I going to have to invest in a hard top due to the temperatures there?
Just want to know before I get stuck with a vehicle that I have no use for.

Thanks!

SW Alaska? Or are you thinking SE Alaska? If SW, then King Salmon and surrounding areas? Either way, it should be fine. As a general rule, they can be a bit light and can catch the wind...but for 4k, I wouldn't pass it up.

there are many Jeeps here and they work well. A few people had soft tops here but changed them over. The plastic rear windows don't stand up to the cold and crack. I've always wanted a Jeep for some reason. Maybe when I grow up I'll buy one(yea ok, I'm grown up already).

Get the hard top before you move sound like a good buy. Reminds me of when I was working for the North Slope Borough Police Dept. back in the 80's. They got a real good buy on some new Chevy Suburbans. Good patrol cars but when never did use the air conditioners, ever. I guess that's part of getting a good buy.

Excellent,

I thought for certain that the answer would be a resounding NO.
Guess I'll write him a check, then.

Alaskan Adventurer,

Yup, SW AK- that's where i am heading.

Warpt,

Yeah, I've always wanted one too, I'll let you know how well it all works out.
I am a middle-aged kid as well...

Thanks!

Just try to park it under a carport or in a garage so the snow load can't collapse the soft top. My good buddy is a jeep fanatic. He buys and sells them all year long. What I can't believe is the price they get for these anymore. Sounds like your getting a deal.

If you plan to drive the Wrangler here the women that drive them here also expect you to be of the outdoorsy type that isn't afraid to get the thing dirty off roading. Lots of them here in Fairbanks.
