How does one access the glacier? Seems like I saw some park entrances off the highway near there when I drove by a couple years ago...but never made it into any of the parks or campgrounds. Is there a road that takes you close enough to do a day hike onto the glacier?

And is it legal to climb on the glacier? We used to crawl all over Exit glacier in Seward but the state has shut down and roped off any access to that one.

The turn is at mile 102 Glenn. You drive down into the valley for a mile or two and cross private land so there's a fee of $15 for residents, $20 for non. Another mile or so past that is the parking lot to access the glacier. It's 1/4 mile walk to get on it. We rented crampons in Anchorage this year. It's legal now. Have to imagine they'll start reconsidering if someone gets hurt.

Hey I'll pay 15 bucks to crawl all over a glacier any day of the week! Thanks for the info! I'll have to drag the Mrs up there and do some picture taking!

Yeah, really easy to access. Here are some photos of the entrance at mile 102 as well as the road down into the valley and where you pay.

You'll have a great time!

Rance, There's a forest service cabin that faces the glacier. 50 bucks per night. The photo I posted on this thread at 06-12-2011, 05:33 PM was taken from the deck of the cabin. Really a hidden gem!

We made ours this year in January for last weekend. Most weekends fill up quick for the summer although Labor Day and beyond is wide open now. We may stay there in Sept as the glacier and valley beyond Sheep Mountain Lodge are gorgeous that time of year.
