Well, we do live on what is locally known as "Mormon Street," and we definitely don't mind standing out a bit.

Some people just don't realize how dangerous this ice can be on buildings. In the mid 70's a new hire for the pipeline died, while waiting in line to enter a building to purchase pipeline clothing. One of these big things fell and impaled him.

Dam, that's quite an ice dam! I've never known anyone to get impaled by them, although I'm sure it happens, but I did have a buddy when I was up in Vermont who had parked his truck right in front of his house because he was loading up materials, and then out of nowhere, the ice dam must have given way, because the whole sheet of roof snow and big icicles like those came sliding off furiously. It ruined his truck, pretty much. Luckily he was inside when it happened, but it was scary. I was standing outside the house, watching it happen. I was always very conscientious about raking my roof from then on!

We had some here a number of years back that were about 3 feet wide reaching to the ground from the second floor. The house leaked heat like a sieve. I use to get up there with an axe to chop it down.
