I'm thinking of buying a home on the water in Juneau and I can't help but notice (mostly from Google Maps satellite view) that very few people have a dock or boathouse. If I have property on the water, I'm probably going to have a boat and a jetski.
Is there some sort of law against having a dock on the water? Can anyone give me any info as to why no homes seem to have their own boathouses?
I lived on a boat in a harbour in Juneau, off and on for 28 days and the tides can vary a great deal. The docks in Juneau have adjustable ramps and I know the docks must be also. People live on their boats in this harbour but you must move the boat once in a while per what I was told... you must get on a list for a spot and can take up to 5 - 10 years to get a spot unless there is less demand because of the economy... good luck
There is very little private property for sale there that actually includes ownership of the tidelands. If you're gonna move up here you'll need to adjust your lower 48 ideals and attitudes. What worked down there may not work up here. I've seen very, very few boathouses in southeast Alaska.
Elvin Cove at the best fishing grounds at the face of Glacier Bay. Has it's own dock. Gustavus town with commercial airport is about 40 miles away by boat. Juneau is 100 miles away plane, ferry, boat.
I wonder about how that works. Tidelands is generally considered to be accessible by the public, but the way things have developed along our coastline there are big areas where there is no public access to the water since you would have to go across someone's property to get there.
It's not that there are NO private boat ramps / docks, but not many.
I believe, but am not certain of this, that you can ask for a permit to build a dock and if there isn't any big objection by the neighborhood it can be approved on a case-by-case basis. You of course can't do anything at all to your property without getting a building permit first.
Not many boathouses here at all; it just isn't done here.
