I am thinking about planning a trip to Alaska, and I need some information on where I would go for the best experience. I am into white water rafting, kayaking, hiking, rock climbing/bouldering etc etc. I appreciate your help. Also, when is the best time to go? Arizona is hottest in August, so I am assuming that is when Alaska is the warmest? Thanks in Advance for your help.

People always think that the best time to visit Alaska is in August. The best time is in June. August is usually rainy and damp. There are some nice days, but June is better...

Thank you. I don't want to get rained out like I did last year in Norway.I think I'll wait until next year.

I like September, the bugs are mostly gone and the leaves are turning.

August always seems the hottest month to me. Sure it cools off at night. But gets hot during the day. But thats just me.

Which part of Alaska you heading too?

If you want to ht up Anchorage, I say June.
But June and July are nice in Fairbanks, as well as May (love may!)

For most people, the best "outdoor adventures" are to be found in the Anchorage, Mat-Su, Denali, and Kenai Peninsula areas. That's not to say the rest of the state has any less to offer, but those areas have established trails/routes, guidebooks, and are generally known well enough that you can get specific questions answered. Not to mention they're probably as beautiful as anywhere else in the state.

The Fairbanks area also has established recreation sites, but the stuff people know about really isn't as high quality as what you'll find in southcentral. Keep it in mind if the coastal weather sucks. There's plenty to do elsewhere, but figuring it out takes quite a bit of pouring over maps, finding local knowledge, and general trial and error. Not to mention the confidence to tunnel into the brush from a highway pullout... Best weather / conditions are to be found mid-May through July. August is usually kinda lame. September is generally rainy but is beautiful with the colors. A solid week of indian summer in september isn't uncommon, but is unpredictable.
