The Army has decided that my skills can be best used in Fort Richardson, AK. I have many questions about this move. I am going to be doing a "Do it yourself" move. I have already weighed the options and I actually enjoy moving myself.

My first question is: When does it start to get really cold/ice/snow in canada and AK? I will be moving at the end of SEPT and am hoping that this is early enough to miss this.

I know I said I have many questions, but a couple of them depends on the answer of the above one.

I am also open to any tips anyone would like to give!

THANKS!

I've driven up in late September before and we hit some flurries but nothing serious. That time of year you do run the risk of hitting some weather.
Number one biggest thing: get a copy of The MILEPOST: Alaska Travel Guide and Trip Planner.

Take your time and really *enjoy* the trip. I drove up (from FL) in 1997 in May and it's forever etched in my mind!

Enjoy...our son just left...was stationed there in Homer, and got orders to move elsewhere....and i have family stationed in anchorage @ AFB there....really beautiful....homer is on coast, so stayed relatively temperate as far as cold goes, and the natural beauty was simply beautiful....look on google for the beautiful AK bald eagles....and i still have a pic of young moose grazing in his yard one morning...quite unexpected, esp for a city kid raised in the desert....but it is very beautiful there...others here can tell you about more specifics...but he was stationed there in winter, and summer...did get crowded in summer somewhat, but again, not compared to the overcrowded city he was raised in ....He loved Kodiak, too, when they did patrol thru there...said it's beautiful...thank you for your service, be safe, and have a wonderful day....
