Is this a good idea?

I knew Auburn half a century ago. I was last there 10 years ago.
It's mushroomed!
I don't know Opelika as well; I just know there is a senior apartment community there.

I don't want to take a trip back in time, I just want a nice safe Alabama home like I had when young. If such a thing exists this day and age.

Any thoughts?

Unless you share more about this "fixed income" house buying budget, it's going to be difficult for people to help. I'll bet you have other preferences besides price! Pretty much a given you'll need to pay more for your nice safe Alabama home than you would have half a century ago.

Sorry, I should have low income, I guess. Social Security + small pension. Not looking to buy; looking to rent and apartment.

There are three HUD-subsidized apartment communities I've been able to find. One in Opelika, two in Auburn.

None has a website so it's really really hard to to a virtual tour of them.
