I am moving from Florida to Alabama. What are the favorite foods that I should try? I realize that I will find them only in Mom & Pop eating establishments. So fire away, as I'm willing to try any new food or drink.

Well you are going to find BBQ everywhere you go....every county in the state is going to have this....it will be the main constant.

If you move into the Birmingham area, you will find a huge amount of seafood. I had a cousin come here from Oklahoma for a football came a few years back and she and her husband were amazed at how many seafood restaurants there are in Birmingham....some are reasonably priced and quite a few are expensive.

Birmingham also has a quite a bit of Chinese, Thai, Indian, Vietnamese, Mexican, South American and French restaurants as well.

Where are you moving to?

BBQ! I remember a really good BBQ place in Guntersville. It was a drive-through. I can't remember what it's called, though. We used to get the BBQ, and take it out on the boat. Yum!

BBQ and catfish are local delicacies. And grits.

IIRC Wanda's and Death by Chocolate (off the square) are local favorites. Also Boondocks.

Some of the more traditional foods you will find in north Alabama are what's known as soul food by blacks and country cookin' by most whites. These foods include things like collard greens, turnip greens, black eyed and purple hull peas, butterbeans, fried okra, cornbread, fried chicken and other meats such as pork chops (fried). Fried green tomatos are also common. You can usually find this kind of stuff in mom and pop restaurants sometimes known as meat & 3's. For one price you get one meat and three vegetables. Sweet tea is the beverage of choice.

One other thing that is different from FL is Barbeque on baked potatoe. Simmons BBQ has them as do other places.

If you get BBQ chicken try the white sauce, most places have it
