I am scheduled to move to the Pell City or Talladega area end of July. I am very scared to move there as I have read horror stories about the tornadoes and the crime in Alabama. If anyone can enlighten me on the kind of living there I would appreciate it so much! It doesn't look like there is much to do there & I have a teenage daughter whom I would be scared to death to let live there with me as well.

I have some friends who live in Pell City and they like it there. I checked the crime there and it is below the national avg.

You can also check out the other threads listed there about Pell City.

Don't now much about Taladega other than there is a NASCAR race there. But you can check out more here too

Tornadoes are in many states, while it is devastating if you are in one they don't hit every year in the same place. If you are scared then be sure you have a safe place to go. Where I live we were hit last year by the April tornadoes. This April we had no tornadoes or even warnings.

Don't worry about the crime, just tell your family you're not into domestic violence and things should be OK.

Tornadoes are hit and miss. Obviously mostly miss. They travel in a line, maybe not straight, and are a couple hundred yards wide usually. One of the epic, all-time-record setting ones from April 27, 2011 came through our area and destroyed some stuff. People rebuild, insurance companies cry.

It has been a while since I saw the statisics online, and my google search mojo seems to not be working well at the moment, but the "natural disasters" to worry about are flooding (not a problem if you pick your land right) and heat. Heat kills more people nationwide than anything. I think wildfires cause the most property damage nationwide, but that seems like something I'd expect, and I remember it was something I didn't.

I think it'd be better to fret about car wrecks and heart disease than the weather and crime.

My epic concern in the area is this:
Restaurants Pell City

Not the greatest selection of restaurants. But, being in a kinda rural area, driving distances is part of the culture. Bham has some good stuff (but I wouldn't want to live there.)

Your biggest adjustment will most likely be the weather.

Thank you, it will be a huge adjustment from where I am right now. It does sound like there are some good things not far from Pell City though. As far as raising kids there, how are the school systems & school activities if you know? my daughter is very active in dance & school projects and the schools in Idaho are wonderful.

Im sorry, I live a bit to the south of T-dega so I cant comment on schools. Maybe someone here who is in the area can do that. Crime won't be any different from ID, I wager. No better, no worse.

Sorry you have to leave ID. Ive been through your area a few times, lovely country.
