I gotta say, having an Africa Forum, is really bringing out some much needed discussion on this continent, that wasn't happening much within the World Forum.
Zara Ray, it is nice to see that you have pride in your country people. But keep in mind that if your relatives have not been making their monthly financials contributions to the Eriteria you won't be allowed in the country.
We spent a lot of time just walking the streets, talking to people, taking pictures, riding the bus, eating. Loved the people. Yes it's dirty, yes it has no/little infrastructure, but it was so enjoyable.
Keep lots of small bills on you to give out.
Once it occured to me that the price I was trying to bring down was apporxamately 50 cents, I stopped. I kept a journal & recorded the people/conversations we had, sites/oddities, colors. I only wish we had spent more time outside the capital.
There are all kind of things I can show you. Don't want to give the perception that everything is perfect, after all if you drive a car in Addis most likely you will be sharing the road with the donkies (really). The entire country is under construction, a new building goes up every day. But wanted to show people what they aren't expecting to see in Ethiopia. The true beauty of the country IMO is outside the capital.
I am coming to love this forum and love, love, love the pictures and commentary. Africa really is the dark continent (sp) to most people and this forum will help open up the area to ordinary people. The pictures are lovely. Thx.
These pics are full of awesome. Though I knew Ethiopia was more than just the images from Live Aid, seeing these shots really shows how out of date my perceptions have been.
I like Aster Aweke. Had no idea she owned a nightspot in Addis. And I had no idea that Ethiopia is as stunning as these pictures make it it out to be. I might have to push it to the top of my "must visit" list.
If it's safe, beautiful, and culturally unique, why isn't the rest of the world hearing more about it?
Probably because the of the Ethiopian government. You know, the one that just banned virtually all forms of VOIP and video conferencing. That type of government has a tendency to repeal many outsiders.
