Reputation is what other users give you if they liked your post, by clicking the "Rate this post positively" link at the bottom of the post; each reputation comment is attached to which post the user liked. So if you write a particularly helpful comment, you might get a few reputation points from it.
It's a way for other people to see how helpful a user you are; if you have a higher reputation, people will probably take your comments more seriously.
SO, if you are LOOKING for information or help, your not going to get a high reputataion because you are not helping ?
No, you never get penalized because you are sincerely seeking help or simply want to start a dialogue on a particular issue or topic. However, you can get a NEGATIVE rep point if you are verbally abuse, use racist remarks or personal attacks. Check with your moderator for details or access old threads at the very bottom of the screen entitled, "About the Forum". Good luck.
You will notice also that the ones with the higher rep count, also have a larger number of posts. So I don't think it means those people are necessarily more helpful, they just post more. I know I try to be helpful when I can, but I'm not a big poster. Of course, this doesn't mean that those who post a lot aren't helpful.

Reason: misspelling
Since this thread is old, note that we don't have negative rep anymore.
