I keep seeing these things by my name when log on. I have 69 of them. What the hell does this mean? Is it good or bad?

You earn them from other visitors who find value in your posts. If you or anyone finds value in a post or a thread that was started, you can simply go to the upper right hand corner of each post and click on the 'scales' icon. There, you can add a rep point to the poster that posted the reply or started the thread and can also add a comment.

After a while, if you receive enough rep points, I believe the thought is that the higher your number, the more credibility others may perceive your personality here in the forums. Sometimes it's biased, sometimes not. However, rep points are usually earned for good posts and are given by just about anyone who wants to rep someone.

I like rep'ing good posts since it costs nothing for me. A sort of pat on the back of soemone who contributes well to the topic at hand. Makes me feel good to rep someone. Though getting them feels nice too since it makes me feel I've made a difference.

As far as any other value like gift certificates, a free dinner, a car or a new home, I don't think they can be redeemed for anything at this time. However, I haven't checked to see if you can omit the acceptance of rep points... I know this software used here is capable of this function. I just don't know if it's been enabled. Some people really don't care about rep points. But, after being here for a while, it's nice to get them if not just a way for someone to say thank you or adda boy.

The people with enormous numbers on the rep points are the ones who argue all day long on the political and religious forums. People who agree with their positions give them rep points. If you want to up your count, go over and bash illegal aliens for a few days. Maybe there ought to be different kinds of rep points for the "fighting" forums than from the ones where people generally give advice and information. But that would be socialist, something that Streisand could love, and secular humanist to boot. (gimme love, righties)

Sometimes I use a rep. to just say "hi" to someone or say something I can't say on the post. Wink!

Too late. Someone gave me some more points. Cut it out people. I hate everyone, especially those who agree with me. BTW, can people really take points away too? Wow. I wished this worked on other BBS I use.
