Why do people have to give a reason for editing a post? When I edit, it is usually for clarity, or addition of something I forgot to put in, or for correction of a typo. I'm curious about why this has to be explicitly justified.
What reasons for editing are such that explicit justification is needed?

I edit to my heart's content. Even though it asks for a reason, I never write one but ignore it. It let's me edit just the same. I believe you've got 90 minutes from the time you write the posting before you lose editing priviledges on it.
If all you're doing is correcting a typo, it doesn't make much diference. But, if you have edited to the extent that you hav changed the meaning of your post, or if you have added something significeant, it's a courtesy to let readers know. Often, your post is read more than once by the same person, as they read aditions to the thread inthe future, and they will more easily notice that you have changed something significant if you add the notice.
It might surprise you how many people read your original message even if you edit it within seconds.
Sometimes, I will even go so far as to add my own notice to show where the additional material starts, like this:
{EDIT} This is where I would add something that wasn't there when I first saved the post.
I just have to point out that you also don't HAVE to give a reason for editing a post. You can simply leave the "reason for editing" box blank.
I agree that if the changes are minor, relating to grammatical mistakes and typos, than there really isn't much need to give reason for editing, but if a post has been significantly altered, then it is just a simple courtesy.
