I volunteer out there and my clients all seem to like it--very well manicured and safe. The one downside is that many of the condos have stairs (which can make it very difficult for some and seemed like a complete oversight when they developed the area!)

I can't imagine living out here without central A/C, although I'd say the same for most of the Bay Area (with the exception of the immediate coast) at this point. I can see some of the older homes not having A/C, but I'm sure as they're upgraded and more cash has come into the area, this is becoming more of a rarity.

I think if you live close to the Bay a lot of people don’t have ac. Like San Lorenzo for example, just fans seem to suffice.

The house I lived in HS in WC didn't and still doesn't have central AC. My mom/step dad did get a portable unit though a few years back in that house. I think its been getting worse, especially at night. I'm surprised they've held out this long.

Success! Concord friends break teeter-totter world record — and made people smile

They survived the heat — and broke the old record by 10 minutes

https://www.eastbaytimes.com/2021/07...-people-smile/

"It was impossible not to smile when watching longtime friends Chuck Walker, 68, and Mike Hartshorn, 57, perched on opposite ends of what is typically a child’s playground staple, as they attempted to break the world record for consecutive time spent on a teeter-totter.

The two men climbed aboard their homemade wood contraption on July 1 at Todos Santos Plaza in downtown Concord and didn’t climb off — for good that is — until 12:10 p.m. Saturday, when they broke the previous record by 10 minutes. Until then, they’d only gotten off the plank for bathroom breaks. The journey wasn’t easy, but they always intended to stick it out through the end."

That seems very difficult, especially in the summer.

Are there any decent elementary and middle schools in Concord?

Wow, when I was growing up in the 80s, in the Northgate area, which was built mostly in the 60s, 70s, and 80s, (and then later, Rancho Paraiso in the 90s), it seemed everyone had central AC. I don't think I knew anyone who didn't have it. And those tract homes were not well insulated. We struggled just to keep the house at 78F in summer. During power outages, the indoor temp could easily get into the mid 80s, and with bedrooms being upstairs, it would be unbearable. My parents also owned some rental properties at that time, most of them in Concord, and some of the older homes just had window unit ACs. But without AC on a 95F summer day, cross breezes can't save ya!

If you look at Google maps at an area in Concord between the Clayton canal and Concord High School, there is a huge area that looks like ammo bunkers?

https://www.google.com/maps/@37.9857...!3m1!1e3?hl=en

What is it and what is its history?
