I'm surprised such a thing is allowed there. Radar detectors are illegal in the EU, I believe

They are but not a GPS based systems that simply alert to the location of speed traps. There are many systems like this in the US.

If this is simply a GPS with a speedcamera database, these have been around for years. Not quite "news" in my opinion. Using actual radar detectors on public roads is illegal here, however one can buy them legally.
