He's worried about it being shut down? There's a guy in Santa Fe who set up a "church" based on ayahuasca use as a "sacrament". He claimed his was a branch of a legitimate church founded in Brazil. Citing law enacted by Congress to exempt from drug laws the Native American Church's use of peyote, he won a Supreme Court case against him.

The Supreme Court really flubbed that one, because the way the law was written and interpreted by the Justice Dept. and the Drug Enforcement Agency specified that it only applied to long-established (i.e. multi-generational) spiritual traditions, while the Brazil "church" was a new phenomenon that doesn't meet the key criterion. Congress wrote the law very carefully, in order to prevent precisely what the Santa Fe so-called "church" was trying to do.

So the Supreme Court's mistake threw open the doors to anyone wanting to form a church around illegal drug use. Maybe the San Fran pastor and his congregation don't have the money that the guy in Santa Fe has (from the wealthy Bronfman family) to pay lawyers to take his case through the courts. Or maybe he's unaware of the loophole the Supremes created, that he might be able to drive a convoy of trucks through with the right legal specialist at the wheel.

I’m not a fan of drug or alcohol abuse.
The world just seemed like a safer place to me when you had to responsibly sneak in a joint or a drink rather than not bothering an abuser/addict when they are passed out on the sidewalks and wake up mean because you were afraid of violating their rights.

I mean, if you are in the privacy of your own home you should be able to do as you please as responsible adults.

I’m kinda concerned that this will add to our drug problems and we already have enough addicts.
This is going to get real when these space cadets drive home from church laughing their way into accidents and carnage.

Well sure, Andy … but I’d point out that driving under the influence isn’t legalized just because the church is legitimized.

Perhaps the “church” should offer dorm beds for sobering up time after services
