I think the I read the max gas stimulus check could be around $1,050 for a family. They are giving out a max of $350 per couple plus another $350 if said couple has dependents. Not per dependent so it would be capped at $1,050. Less if you are not under the lowest income cap which I don't recall. So even a family with a household income of up to say $400K or $500K may get up to $600 or so.

The dumb thing is as another poster mentioned the state is legally obligated to give this money back to the tax payers. They are just putting lipstick on it and calling it gas tax relief. They could call it anything, it has to go back to the taxpayers.

And yeah seems like they could roll this thing out by August or September rather than October before the election.

The gas tax rises again tomorrow. That should cover these rebates

Fortunately, my wife and I are still remote so doesn't affect us too much.

Spectacular.

I loved this: Newsom and Democrats in the Legislature say they don't want to suspend the state's tax on gasoline because they don't trust the big oil companies and refineries to pass on the savings to drivers.

Lawmakers/the governor won't do what they have the power to do, because they don't think the oil companies will do something which is completely out of the control of the legislature. That makes perfect sense to the brainless. Way to go, Democratic super majority.

I think that’s a perfectly valid reason, and have been saying the same thing for a while now.

The two are mutually exclusive though.
The state can lower or remove the gas tax, while or even if oil companies still increase the cost of fuel. Nobody has to "pass on the savings" in this scenario. The state can help AND the oil companies can help (and won't). The state saying "we won't because they won't either" is an excuse --a bad one, at that.

I agree, but under your scenario, the state loses money, the people lose money, and Oil (which has been raking in profits) earns even more. Let’s say the tax lowers by .40 a gallon. There is no requirement for gas stations to lower their price by the same amount, and we wouldn’t know if they did or not, because all they would have to say is supply costs have i creased by the same amount, and we’d still be paying anyway. Trust me, I’d love it if it could work as a tax-pause, and consumers reaped all the benefits, but as the oil companies have already proven, their concern is profits, not helping consumers, and a tax pause would easily turn into more profit for them instead of helping us.

Putting the governor's "theory" (aka excuse) to the test:

The average price of a gallon of self-serve regular gasoline in San Diego County dropped Sunday for the 18th consecutive day, decreasing four-tenths of a cent to $6.215. The average price has dropped 15.8 cents over the past 18 days, including 1.3 cents Saturday, according to figures from the AAA and the Oil Price Information Service.

The dropping prices are continuing despite a gas tax increase of 2.8 cents per gallon that took effect Friday.
