Never understood the disdain for heat. Cold, I get it but heat? People want to make all kinds of summer plans and talk about summer goals, but want to shy away from places that have summer weather year round. Makes sense.

I have a job that permits me to live anywhere as long as I am reasonably close to an airport.
Some people simply aren't hot weather people. I happen to be one of em. Niece got married in Bidwill Park in August and damn near killed a lot of us. The weather in Chico or Sacramento would suit you well though I think. I know you've considered Sacramento on your list as well.

Last I knew Chico didn't have scheduled passenger service from the airport. You'd be using Sacramento. On a perfect commute day, the drive would take about 1 1/2 hrs.

IMO Chico has grown a lot - but still retains a bit of a small town feeling.

Awesome stuff, thanks for the input.

An hour and change is totally doable as far as airport distance goes.

There's a shuttle if you're so inclined. We used it for the Marysville to SMF leg when I lived in the Yuba County foothills.

The Sacramento Airport Connection, daily shuttle service from Chico, Paradise, Oroville and Marysville to Sacramento Intl Airport

Hope you find what you're looking for. I, too, prefer hot to cold so I understand where you're coming from in that regard.

The other benefit for you would be that you could still get to the Bay Area for quarterly meetings and what not without having to hop on a plane. Whereas if you lived somewhere like AZ you could make the drive, but its a looong one. We've got one engineer who works remotely from NM and he 'drives' out quarterly. The guy hates to fly for some reason. But for our last meeting he was blocked due to snow along his route at the high passes. So he missed out and some really important training unfortunately.

In addition, I bet homes are relatively affordable given the limited local employment. That can actually be an advantage for some who aren't reliant on the local economy. Just did a quick check and indeed, the homes are reasonably priced.

He must drive something more spirited than a Prius.

You'll love it here. I moved out here last May for work, and it's easily one of the best towns I've lived in.
  • Very little (if any) traffic
  • Lots of places to go jogging/hiking/boating
  • Pretty low COL
  • Relatively close proximity to Sacramento, San Francisco, Mt. Shasta, etc...
  • Very active meetup community, so pretty easy to make new friends

One thing about Paradise though, and this might be nitpicking... I don't know what cell carrier you have, but I worked a shift up there, and in about a 1 mile radius, I had ZERO cell service (I have AT&T).

Just saw this... true, homeless is not a problem unique to Chico. However, Chico seems to have a disproportionate number of homeless that affect the quality of life, especially for those who go downtown and to Bidwell Park. I can tell you, it was not always this way - and acceptance of a current condition does not mean that was always the norm. Again, do a google search... I'm guessing the same results would not result with other, similar sized cities. Chico appears to be on the map of destinations where being homeless is accepted by the local government, and the fear of "criminalizing" homelessness has led to where Chico is now. It's a complex problem: alcohol/drugs, mental illness, physical illness, down on luck, no motivation, etc. may all contribute. I do not have simple solutions, but I do not believe that allowing such a problem to get to the point that it has makes much sense.

Everyone has their own limit as to when a significant homeless population enters the conversation as an "issue". Chico is indeed a great town, but the homeless situation has tarnished some of its shine, in my opinion.
