Health Care - Austin, Texas

Health Care - Health Care & Wellness

The first hint that Austin is a city that values wellness is the constant reminder over the airport public address system: Austin is a Clean Air City. Smoking is strictly verboten in most public places, although the battle over smoking in nightclubs suggested there was a backlash to political correctness among some Austinites. Perhaps that was an indication of another much-valued community trait—tolerance. That tolerance combined with a willingness to try new approaches also means Austin is a place where alternative therapies and health care options are widely available.

Health food stores, including the flagship store of the now international and publicly traded Whole Foods Market chain, are not only evidence of Austin’s concerns about wellness but also serve as conduits for alternative therapy information. More and more mainstream stores stock organic foods, offer herbal supplements, and sometimes have on-site massage.
