Telephone: (203) 432-2977
Address: 121 Wall St.
Description: This huge, marble, Rubik’s Cube building near the center of Yale’s campus is a book lover’s shrine. Marble walls filter the light to protect the rare books and give the effect of being in a cavern, if a cavern had comfortable leather chairs and low-lit cases of valuable books. The huge glass tower in the center with 5 floors of incredibly old books is surrounded by extensive, changing thematic exhibits with manuscripts, authors’ drafts, and notes. You’ll also find a Gutenberg Bible from 1455 and a huge original copy of Audubon’s Birds of America. The real research areas of the library spread out beneath the marble edifice and courtyard. Outside, don’t miss the Isamu Noguchi sculpture court or the Alexander Calder stabile sculpture across the way.

Insider Pick:
Description: University art galleries are often overhyped, but let’s face it, this is Yale. They have one of the best collections of art, period, and what isn’t at the Center for British Art is here, right across the street. If you like sculpture and craft, they have collections of ancient art, African art, Asian art, and Indo-Pacific art. If you’re into European art, they have a great selection of Impressionists and Postimpressionists (including van Gogh’s Night Cafe), as well as earlier Renaissance and medieval paintings. The modern art includes works by Duchamp and Liechtenstein, and you’ll find works by Hopper, O’Keeffe, Cézanne, Picasso, Degas, Kandinsky, Monet . . . the list goes on. This is yet another free attraction, thanks to the generosity of Yale’s benefactors.

8. New Haven Symphony Orchestra
City: New Haven, CT
Category: Tours & Attractions
Telephone: (203) 865-0831
Address: 105 Court St.
Description: With its first performance in 1895, this is the fourth oldest orchestra in the US, and persists in its success even though it is located in a much smaller city than Boston, New York, or Chicago. They run two different series, the first at Woolsey Hall at Yale, currently directed by famous English conductor William Boughton. These are primarily classical concerts such as Beethoven symphonies or new works by composers in residence. The orchestra also runs a Pops series at the Shubert Theater and at the high schools in the area. They focus on other sorts of works, like Big Band, jazz, and flamenco, and are directed by Gerald Steichen, the associate conductor. The New Haven Symphony often collaborates with soloists like Glenn Gould, Yo-Yo Ma, and Itzhak Perlman.
