    Observation: The handwash station in the kitchen is being used as a dump station. Inspector observed food debris and lids in the sink. Operator removed lids and instructed employees not use sink as a dump station.
    Correction: The handwash facility identified above is to be used for washing hands only

Facility was very clean and orderly. Cook top and exhaust hood were the cleanest the inspector has seen to date. No violation noted during inspection. Operator was provided copy of inspection report. Operator will install shield around the newly installed hand washing sink next to preparation table.

    Observation: When tested, no sanitizer or a low concentration of chemical sanitizer was found in the sanitize basin.
    Correction: Provide proper concentration of chlorine sanitizer and immerse or expose food contact surfaces to sanitizing solution for adequate time.

Inspection conducted and discussed with owner/operator. A review of the food service menu was conducted with the owner/operator. There have been no changes in offered menu items. The back small food prep area was under construction and no food prep was being done in that area during the inspection. Owner/operator stated that it is projected to be completed in Spring 2014, with the installation of the new vent hood system.
  • Food Storage Containers - Identified with Common Name of Food (corrected on site)
    Observation: Unlabeled bulk food containers.
    Correction: Label working containers with the common name of its contents. Consumers may be allergic to certain foods or ingredients. The mistaken use of an ingredient when the consumer has requested that it not be used may result in severe medical consequences. Liquid foods and granular foods may resemble cleaning compounds. The mistaken use of food from an unlabeled container could result in chemical poisoning.
02/05/2014Routine
A complaint inspection was conducted today at the Cape Charles Coffee House regarding the septic system. I spoke with owner/operator. I discussed the complaint and we conducted an inspection together. All handwashing lavatories, the 3-Vat sink and the mechanical warewash machine were functioning properly at time of inspection. Also both restrooms were properly functioning, i.e. toilets flushed. Owner/operator stated that the establishment had not had any issues since Feb. 8, 2013. On that date the Town brought in the “jet” and flushed the whole system. Since then no issues with the septic system have occurred. Owner/operator also stated that there were never any issues with the kitchen’s handwashing lavatories, 3-Vat sink or the mechanical warewash machine. The only problem was the toilets not properly flushing in both restrooms.

Inspection discussed with person in charge. There was a review of the menu with the operator. All items that are not allowed to be cooked by Building Official has been blocked out with white labels. No food product was found in food establishment that is not on menu.
  • Equipment - Cutting Surfaces
    Observation: The cutting board in the back food prep area is heavily scratched and scored. The food contact surface is no longer easily cleaned and sanitized due to condition.
    Correction: Resurface or discard and replace the cutting boards to provide a food contact surface that is smooth, easily cleaned and sanitized.
01/25/2013Routine
Complaint discussed with person in charge. Operator stated she was cooking off premises. Operator agreed to stop cooking off premises and not to fry or cook in her permitted food facility kitchen unless the items are approved from the building official. Menu needs to be changed to reflect approved menu items. Inspection conducted jointly with building official. Will re-inspect with in the next 7 days.
