Description: This division has nearly 31,000 students in 5 high schools, 8 middle schools, 26 elementary schools, and 5 early childhood centers. For five straight years, all five of the city’s high schools made Newsweek magazine’s list of the nation’s top high schools, and the division has received a Technology Leadership award from the National School Boards Association. Hilton Elementary was named a Blue Ribbon School by the U.S. Department of Education in 2009, one of only 264 schools across the country and 6 in Virginia to be included.

Description: This independent college prep on a 60-acre campus serves the Peninsula. There are about 640 students in a 10–1 ratio with teachers, and all are accepted into colleges and universities after graduating—with more than 90 percent getting into their first choice. It is the only independent, non-sectarian secondary college prep on the Peninsula and celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2009.

Description: This constantly evolving university grew quickly from a local college founded in 1960 into a regional powerhouse that was named one of the 10 “up and coming” liberal arts schools in the nation by U.S. News & World Report’s “America’s Best Colleges” guide. The university now offers 80 areas of study on its 260-acre campus stuffed with new facilities. There are 4,800 students here, some 3,000 of whom live on campus, and they have rated the dorms and apartment complexes “best in the state.” The school is adjacent to the Mariners’ Museum and its 550-acre wooded park.
