Description: Kids at Heart is a sweet neighborhood store in the Hawthorne shopping district; it keeps area residents supplied with birthday presents, art supplies, Playmobil sets, and Brio trains, but it’s worth a trip for nonresidents too. Kids at Heart has a fine collection of dress-up clothes, games, and science-oriented toys—kits turning children into spies and explorers have been recent hits at parties. You won’t find Barbie, but you will find Madeline dolls and Groovy Girls in addition to a whole wall of trains and building toys.

Description: Black Wagon is a charming store in the Mississippi neighborhood that offers beautiful children’s shoes and clothing (from birth to age 12), much of it handmade, organic or recycled fiber, and very chic. In addition to the great clothes, however, they also offer a stylish collection of bedding, decor and furniture, toys, books, and music. Their online store is excellent as well, so you can still shop there after you’ve gone home.

Description: Grasshopper offers wonderful clothes for children, many of them handmade right there (or down the street at the “mother” store, Tumbleweed). Brands include the store’s own Wild Carrots, Kate Quinn Organics, and Picaflor, among many others. There is also a large selection of well-made, lead-free toys. The beautiful space is a pleasure to shop in, and your children will also enjoy themselves, possibly almost as much as you. Grasshopper is open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. (5 p.m. on Sun and Mon). They have a cool blog too, with things like DIY bubble soap.

Description: Finally, a store that understands the parental shopper: We are buying things for our children that secretly we want to wear ourselves. So the fancy shoes, wonderful tights, jewels, and very imaginative accessories that also come in adult sizes are a few reasons to shop in this colorful, attractive store. Another reason is the beautiful, clean, and spacious bathroom that stocks disposable diapers for emergencies. And still another: the kids’ toys. Yet one more is the big cookie jar. Did we mention the adult sizes?

Description: Beautiful, well-made cotton clothes that look good and feel good are the specialty of this amazing Portland store, and it has acquired an international following through its catalog sales since its founding here in 1983. These clothes last a long time—even the tights. The clothes are meant to last for more than one child, so the company has a program to pass on gently used Hannas to needy children. Hanna Andersson is open Mon through Fri 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on Sat from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. (See the Shopping chapter for more details.)

Description: Beautiful natural-fiber clothing for children and their mothers (their pregnant and nursing mothers, that is), as well as a fine selection of baby accessories and some toys, draws people from all over town to this cozy shop on Hawthorne. The collection of clothing and accessories for pregnant and nursing women is thoughtful, and the children’s clothing is adorable.

Description: This is the go-to spot for organic cotton diapers, diaper covers, baby slings, and other organic-fiber baby supplies. They carry lovely skin products for mother and baby, and many BPA- and phthalate-free cups, pacifiers and teethers, including the French classic Sophie the Giraffe, newly discovered as the toy du jour of hip American parents.

Description: Nike Town is the high-tech, ultramodern retail outlet for shoes, shirts, caps, and other sports apparel with that famous swoosh logo. The corner store is easy to spot with its life-size metallic silhouette of His Airness, Michael Jordan, on the south wall. Description: Beautiful, beautiful children’s clothes for newborns and their siblings up to age six are the specialty of this pretty store in Southeast Portland—though they also sell diaper bags, gifts, wooden toys, and accessories as well. Shoes from See Kai Run are best-sellers, as well as wonderful baby T-shirts by Glug. Polliwog also carries dresses by Mister Judy, handmade in Portland.

Description: It is often difficult to find high-quality baby clothing and gifts that are gender-neutral, but Presents of Mind not only has baby and toddler clothing that is in other colors besides pink and blue, it also has baby and toddler clothing that is made by local Portland artisans. Here you’ll find soft baby hats made out of recycled cashmere sweaters, cute organic-cotton onesies, and sweet handsmocked dresses, among many other inventive things.
