Description: Your first glance around Father and Son might not convince you that a mid-century modern treasure awaits inside, but once your eyes adjust to the jumbled inventory, you’ll realize you’ve come to the right place. Sleek retro pieces that look as if they came from the set of Bewitched, vintage album covers and signs, local artwork, and oddities galore compete for space in the store’s two-levels. Upstairs is vintage clothing. The shop’s owner is nationally renowned as a dealer in mid-century modern pieces and his clients have included actress Hilary Swank. The inventory changes frequently, so there’s always a reason to pop in.

Description: In Raleigh’s Quail Ridge Shopping Center, the independently owned bookstore has been a Raleigh favorite since 1984. The shelves hold a wide variety of titles, including the best selection of local and Southern authors in the Triangle. The stores hosts three or four authors per week, ranging from celebrities to local favorites. Programming also includes musical performances, book club events, and events for teens and children.

Description: The North Raleigh store has been in the orchid and gardening business for more than a dozen years. Atlantic Avenue has a vast selection of plants and gardening paraphernalia. Inventory includes bird supplies, irrigation supplies, and the store’s own brand of fescue. They have a large selection of orchids and orchid supplies as well as tropicals and topiaries. Their selection of shrubs, trees, perennials, and container gardening plants is impressive as well.

Description: Downtown in the Shops at Seaboard Station, Logan’s has a knowledgeable staff that takes a lot of the guesswork out of buying plants. The business began as a vendor booth at the State Farmers’ Market in 1965 and moved to the old Seaboard Rail Station downtown in 1991. Logan’s selection of perennials, annuals, vegetables, trees, and shrubs is vast, and they offer ideas to suit particular gardening situations. Inside the store is a good selection of tropicals, orchids, bird supplies, pots, and, when in season, some fresh local produce. Logan’s is also home to the Seaboard Cafe, which serves lunch six days a week. Logan’s is closed on Sunday.

Description: Nanette Lepore, BCBG, and MBLEM by Mandy Moore are among the labels on the racks at Scout and Molly’s boutiques in North Hills mall and Chapel Hill’s Meadowmont. The stores are cozy and comfortable, and the sales staffs are helpful. It’s a great place to find everything from jeans to a flirty party dress. Next door to the North Hills store is WALK, a Scout & Molly’s shoe boutique carrying designers including Marc Jacobs and Michael Kors and bags by BCBG, Heather Hawkins, and Joe’s Jeans, to name a few. Scout & Molly’s offers its own private label jewelry as well as pieces by local designers. The shop is named for the owner’s beloved Labrador retrievers, who can sometimes be found lolling about on the boutique floor.
