Description: The centerpiece of this 72-acre Chapel Hill Park, one of the newest in the city, is an inline skate hockey rink. Also on site are picnic shelters, a playground, basketball courts, a two-acre dog park, hiking and running trails, and an 18-hole disc golf course. More than half of the park’s acres are dedicated to natural areas. Six art installations using elements like boulders and downed trees, which were saved during the construction of the park, will dot the area when they are complete.

Description: Vertical Urge, a longtime Triangle skateboard shop, has operated Chapel Hill’s city-owned skate park since 2006. The 10,000-square-foot concrete park, inside Homestead Park, has wooden ramps and quarter-pipes and includes a concession stand and pro shop. Instructors offer lessons on site. Waivers signed by parents are required for those younger than 18. The park charges $7 per session for Orange County residents and $8 for non-residents. Annual memberships that bring down the cost of individual sessions are available.

Description: Separate areas are provided for large and small dogs. Parks are open dawn to dusk. No dogs younger than six months. No dog owners younger than 12 allowed without adult supervision. Pet owners must scoop poop. No digging. No dogs in heat. Admission is free.

5. The Preserve At Jordan Lake Golf Club

Description: East of Fearrington Village along Jordan Lake, the Preserve is in the midst of a residential area, but it retains the natural character of its wooded lakeside setting. It is a tough, 7,107-yard, par-72 course designed by North Carolina native Davis Love III. It features tight fairways and rolling greens. The club includes a pro shop, putting green, and driving range. PGA and LPGA staff offer private lessons. The Grille at the Preserve offers fine dining. Green fees are $28 to $68.

Description: The 52,000-square-foot facility is home to an indoor pool, indoor track, indoor basketball court, aerobics studios, cardiovascular and strength training equipment, and free weights. Center instructors lead a full slate of activities including weight training, aerobics classes, water workouts, cycling, and yoga for all ages. Nutrition and weight management, disease management, and rehabilitation programs are offered as well.
