Restaurants - Savannah, Georgia

Restaurants

Beyond the glitz of food television’s Southern-cliché cooking shows, the realm of eating takes on a sophisticated flare in many of Savannah’s restaurants. In other words, there’s more to Savannah’s cuisine than fried chicken, mashed potatoes, gravy, and lots of “y’alls.” While this is a city that thrives on home cooking, there are even more culinary secrets to be found here! Word of the mild climate, romantic aura, and lower cost of living in Savannah has spread like butter on hot biscuits and, as a result, attracted gourmet chefs and creative entrepreneurs to the mix of tradition. The results: trendy cafes in historic facades, high-end restaurants, and enchanting eateries.

So how about the fare? What’s new and what’s Savannah’s claim-to-fame with regards to dining? Apart from the Southern staples like creamy grits, cornbread, and pecan pie, many of Savannah’s acclaimed provisions come from the sea. There’s fresh shrimp steamed and spiced to perfection. There are crab cakes that take the cake. There’s flounder served on an oversized plate, crispy and adorned with apricot glaze. And if your mouth isn’t watering by now, there are hush puppies, made at least a hundred different ways.

So pull out your napkin, or better yet, bring an oversized bib. Buy your travel pants a size larger and with an elastic waist. You’re about to be dazzled.

Description: This family-run Thai/Vietnamese restaurant has transformed a storefront on the city’s former main retail street into a sleek-looking restaurant for lunch and dinner. Pick the subtler Vietnamese dishes, or follow the crowd to the trendier (and spicier) Thai menu. Our Thai favorites include bai ka pao, which is stir-fried meat (choose beef, chicken, or pork) with basil, garlic, onions, and mushrooms, and the green curry, which offers a choice of meat in curry, coconut milk, and vegetables. Servings are large enough to serve two people amply. This is an excellent place for vegetarians to eat. For dessert, try the green tea ice cream. Lunch is served daily from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.; dinner is from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Description: Cafe 37 is an adorable 10-table French cafe that is perfect for a girls’ lunch out with a little antique shopping on the side. Housed within an antique shop, there’s a small outdoor seating area and a menu that exudes freshness. The breads are freshly baked, making each sandwich a soulful experience. There’s a “small plates” dinner menu that changes weekly; an example would be rib eye and potatoes with a brandy-cream sauce for $14. There’s a nice selection of wines. Take care to lock your car and be wary of your surroundings as this neighborhood has been prone to crime. Hours are 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tues through Sat; 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sun.
