1.5 may not be enough given the age of 55 and life expectancy. Sorry to burst the bubble.

Go to one of the hill stations in India. You will be able to afford a comfortable life, have a cook and other help. Travel to your hearts content. Or if being closer to the US is important, try Mexico.

Since I currently live as a 40+yo rootless drifter, I have minimal material needs. Given that I can rent a Costa Rican villa with servants for USD$300/month, $1.5m is not needed. Most of our lousy humanity survives on less than USD$2/day. I would be a private microlender, issuing $20 loans @50% (nonprofits charge 30% with restrictions). The interest should cover my expenses. To maintain a quick escape exit, I would not own any property.
My time would be spent partying until I overdose.

I would by a place in Malta---no property tax, 15% income tax, english speaking , just a short jump to Europe. Enjoy yourself!!!!
