I'd say at least double the content of the first game's initial release, and the planetary patrol areas are larger, especially Earth. Live events are marked on the map so you can spawn right to them, and best of all you don't have to go to orbit every time you want to travel to a new activity.
I haven't played much of the Crucible/PvP to see how that stacks up to the old game, though.

Yep, anywhere in the world at any time. Well techically there are 3-4 "landing zones" for each planet, and you travel from there to an event/mission, but still no need for orbiting.

You get your sparrow when you reach level 20. After that, the faster sparrows drop in cosmetic bundle sets you receive in lieu of leveling up.
