For item (d), I think that's a very big part of it. People who reject reality and instead choose to believe in some alternative explanation, usually with conspiracy theories to explain away the conventional understanding, often have this same deviant view on many things. They want to believe they are smarter than everyone else - they're in possession of this secret knowledge - "the real truth", while everyone else is a "sheep".
