I enjoyed reading all the posts, but, they were posted so long ago that I was wondering if there was anything more recent that I should be aware of. I am a medical assistant by trade. I am also a chef/baker. Any market for those positions? Also, how are the schools? My son is fifth grade and my daughter is third. Thanks ahead of time. :-)
The schools have been hit hard by budget cuts. The improving stock market has improved the PERS payouts faced by the schools which should ease the budget issues.

50% of the students are minorities, not 50% illegal immigrants.

I would think medical assistant would be your best bet for work. Salem Hospital might have some positions open, and Salem Clinic has an expansion going on down south.

As for schools, most are average in the district. Generally speaking the schools in south Salem and West Salem are considered better schools by the community.

Schools are 50% non-hispanic white, 37% hispanic and 13% other. I guess anyone that's not non-hispanic white is illegal.

We were at our neighborhood park here in south Salem recently and heard English, Russian, Chinese, Pakistani (?) and Spanish, in roughly that order of prevelance. I think the diversity here to be a good thing. It is mostly hispanic , but there is a lot of other groups as well.

Oh, and welcome to Salem. We came from the northern end of California and like it here. Our biggest likes are the climate, downtown and the nice older neighborhoods nearby, the views and greenery, the short drive to the coast, and Portland. We dislike Lancaster and Commercial. My wife says she hates that one of her favorite neighborhoods is in the landslide area.

Minorities in Salem tend to be largely undocumented, including Former Soviet Republic immigrants.

Lancaster, Commercial, and River Road, all provide a wealth of shopping opportunities. They are not residential, nor were they meant to be.
