Hi All

A few weeks back, a heat wave was going through all of the west. Salem was not excluded from that. However, I have been watching the temps since then and they are consistently in the high 80's and lower 90's. Is this normal summer temps for the Salem area? When does the weather start to cool off? Here in So Cal, it doesn't cool off until late October, sometimes later.

Just like today. It goes up and down. So ... Yes, this is normal. We get our share of 90 degree days, followed by temps in the mid 60's.

So if high 80's and low 90's are normal this time of year, why doesn't anyone have air conditioning? How do folks stay cool?

Don't need it. We just open all the windows in the evening and leave them open all night. The house will cool down to around 60 and never gets over 80 during the day. Just close all the windows around 10 AM. In the shade around here it is 10 to 15 degrees cooler than full sun and houses don't get that warm long enough or often enough to use air conditioning.

We do run a window unit we install when it gets very hot. We have one west facing room that is exposed on three sides (North and South) so it gets a little warm. It also has an 5X10 Window facing West into the setting sun, so we cool it on the warm days.

karlsch - thanks for the thread referral. Yep, looks like we'll need a/c when we get there or soon thereafter.
