Will try to make this long story short - check engine light came on. Took to my usual place. Guy said the check engine light code indicated a problem with the transmission, they drove it, no problems but fluid needs flushing = $180. Scheduled it. On that day received a call from their "transmission specialist" who says that the code he is getting from checking the check engine light is that the transmission is skipping. Says there is no use changing the fluid cause I need a new transmission.
Now, this is an automatice transmission and I've not noticed any skipping, pulling, hesitations or anything while driving the car. Not to mention they said they couldn't feel anything either when they drove the car. The specialist says the computer is picking up what we can't yet. I'm looking at $3000 to replace the transmission. 2005 Jeep Liberty with 137,000 miles. Does anyone know of a trusted transmission repair shop for a 2nd opinion? Any fair-minded advice welcomed!
My suggestion would be to get the ACTUAL code - and not what he says it means - from your usual guy. Then your first step might be to google the code and your make and model. Next you might want to look for an "enthusiast" forum or website for Jeep or Jeep Liberty owners. I can almost guarantee there is one out there. Describe your problem there including the actual code and you might get some good info. Sorry I don't have a suggestion for a local place to get a second opinion from.

This is sage advice. Fully understanding what triggers the code is essential to a diagnosis (i.e the "catalyst efficiency" code is not always a bad cat). The code and a good user forum is your best next step.
The "specialist" works at my usual place. They are a do it all kinda place. He did tell me that they would have to use Chrysler products cause their autos don't do well with generic fluids. I went to Auto Zone first and got the code - it just said "trans" with a number if I remember correctly. I'll have to get the code and google it. I just think I won't be satisfied until I have at least one other mechanic take a look. $3000 is a lot for me to be shelling out right now.
If you trans was slipping you should definitely be able to feel it. I would def. get a second opinion and get the actual code that is being thrown and google it to see what you find. To me it sounds like they are just trying to drum up some business for themselves. How old is your car and how many miles do you have on it? Have you ever flushed the trans fluid before? If you have over 100K miles and have never flushed it I would recommend not flushing it and just changing the fluid out.

There is definitely a "Jeep forum" or two out there.
If you do end up needing a transmission person, I used Brown's Automatic Transmissions a while back and was very happy with the results. He's out in the middle of nowhere - off highway 96 and 401 - but the price was amazingly reasonable, so it was worth the drive.
