This is actually a great research thread. Hopefully Clearchannel doesn't have its spies out.

The B-b-b-b-big Lipped Bandit at HOT 103.9, the station where hip hop lives.

Seriously if you are looking from some good R&B, hip hop, or rap tune in to 106.1 KMEL in the Bay Area. They have West Coast Wednesdays and it last the whole morning, not 20 min. They support the local talent and they love to take it back in the day because most of the dj's on the channel are in their late 30's. It's a really good mix.

See that's nice, if only they did that everywhere Hip-Hop would be in better condition. That's what I like about the Bay Area, a lot of people listen to a lot of Bay Area underground artists and enjoy it more than mainstream, that's how I am with NYC/Jersey/Philly underground artists.

It would be nice if more cities/regions supported their own talent more than they currently do, they could play main stream in conjunction with underground.

That's what I liked about 93.3 in Houston. It really supported the local talent around here. 97.9 does as well, but they are more mainstream.

How about trying to live in a city that doesn't have a rap/hip-hop station at all?

Here in the DC area, we have both 93.9 WKYS, and WPGC 95.5. Both are pretty much the EXACT same, except form the fact that in 95.5's case they play more old school songs during the day, and they designate an hour each night (9pm) to a local style of music here in DC called go-go. On 93.9, it's pretty much your standard radio station which plays more "street" material than 95.5, and they also spend most nights doing more mixshows (5-6pm) then at 6:30, and also at 9pm.
