I am a big time niner fan. On draft day, I was very disappointed. To me, he is a system QB and his college competition was suspect. The system he played in was perfect environment to excel. I did not see opportunities for him to work off the cuff. Plus, Alex Smith does not have what it takes to make in the NFL. His heart seems suspect and the ability to adapt are questionable. That Green Bay QB has heart, he has been sacked 20 times but still finds the reciever.
When the niners hired Mike Martz, I said ok, a great system. Alex needs an offensive coordinator to do the work for him, kind of staging the environment. After the Mike Martz debacle, I lost hope and started thinking a trade was most appropriate.
It did not happen so we move forward to the present. Alex needs quick short passes and a strong running game. We have one piece, a strong running game, when he plays. I feel those variables are keys to niners success, besides trading him. If the niners achieve the above there is a possibility of <9-7 season.
I hope he does well but making his first start in a couple of years against the Colts at home is not exactly the perfect situation for his confidence. It would have helped him if they were at home playing the Rams or something.
