On Friday April 12, 2024, I mailed my federal income tax forms off to the IRS via US Mail (I use forms that precluded e-filing), together with a physical check for a large 6-figure dollar amount of my balance due.

FINALLY, on May 6, they cashed the check.

I sent the envelope via Certified Mail so I could track & get receipt of when it was delivered. It took a couple weeks for USPS to ship it from Salt Lake City to the IRS in Cincinnati OH. It spent a week at the post office in Cincinnati.

I asked the USPS what was going on - I was concerned my envelope was "lost in the mail" and they told me that the IRS only has the capacity to process so many pieces of incoming mail per day, and the USPS has a warehouse dedicated to mail items to be delivered to the IRS awaiting the "all clear" to bring more mail to them.

I had to do a paper return one year. Rather that send a check I paid electronically. There was a bunch of stuff in the news about the IRS mail getting stolen so they could wash the checks. Probably mostly it was '90s shark attack hysteria but I figured why take the chance. Glad it worked fine for you.

I mailed my much much much smaller check to the IRS on Saturday April 13th, along with my extension. It cleared my bank on April 19th, less than one week later. It's always fast.

I always mail a check with the extension so I know that they received it.

A year or two ago I had to wait 6 to 12 months for them to record receipt of my paper return. I knew they received it as I sent it certified. They just do not have the staff. I don't think a for profit business could exist if they were that slow.

Remember the IRS has 4 different processing centers where people send their paper checks. Some may be better staffed than others, etc.

See last page of 1040-V

Businesses can hire more people at any time. The IRS can only hire as many as Congress approves. This is one reason for the $80 billion over 10 years budget request. More people and better systems.

Must be an April crunch. I filed in late March, sending the return and check priority mail. My check was cashed within 7 days.

IRS should be completely abolished, it's unconstitutional agency. The US spends way more than the taxes it collects, it doesn't even matter if they collect every single dime with penalties of owed taxes. We spend on printed money way more than our children can earn and pay so why even bother with taxes. Let the middle class keep their taxes and only tax what we consume. IRS keeps the middle class under control and the poor stay poor.
