A new Publix is coming to Newberry, which would be the largest store in Alachua County. So far, no opening date has been announced.

Newberry is growing so fast. We used to rent in Arbor Greens in the Jonesville section of Newberry about 8 years ago and in that intervening time, our former neighborhood has nearly tripled in size. (And housing prices have gone up about 50%). Lots of new homes going up everywhere, especially on the west side of the county.

Newberry had the reputation of being a more affordable place to live compared to Gainesville but it’s quickly catching up. There’s a Hitchcock’s close to that proposed location. Looks like competition is barreling in.

Newberry does have two other Publixes, so this will be its third, although this new one will be massive compared to the other two. One is a smaller Publix in Newberry Square, near Tower Road and I-75 and the other is in the Tioga neighborhood about 6 miles or so east of the new Publix location.

If you had told me 8 years ago that Alachua County would be growing like it has, I never would have believed you. It used to be a very sleepy place, and still is compared to South Florida, where we’re from. But now it is booming, just like the rest of the state.

I was reading some comments on the Facebook post, and some commenters were hoping for locations in Chiefland and Trenton. If this rate of growth keeps up, I wouldn't be surprised if Publix opened a location in either town within the next 10 years.
