Are there any other good school districts around those areas? I heard West Springfield HS is very good, but I want to have a little bit more choices, what other good schools there (from Elementary -> Middle -> High)?

Thanks.

There are lots of good schools in Fairfax. If you are looking in Springfield/Burke you can find areas that feed West Springfield, Lake Braddock and Robinson high schools.

Thanks, can you name more schools, since I am new to VA. If I see the school on a listed house, I will pay more attention on it.

Thanks a lot!

The high schools (and schools that feed into them) that Fredesch listed are certainly the ones with the best reputations and highest test scores. Personally, I wouldn't write off homes zoned for Lee HS or South County HS either. Lee, in particular, does draw from a more economically diverse area, but there are still plenty of nice neighborhoods within that pyramid (including my own, in my opinion). They are still part of the Fairfax County school system and the people with whom I have spoken and have personal knowledge of the schools speak positively about them. I don't have kids yet, so you can certainly take my opinion with a grain of salt, but I feel just fine about sending our kids to the schools in the Lee HS pyramid despite the fact that their numerical ratings are not as high as some of the other close by schools. And, in my experience house hunting last year, my purchasing power went a little further by buying in the Lee HS pyramid. I'll concede that if all things had been equal, I would have bought a house in the West Springfield pyramid, but, when house hunting, that is rarely the case. I guess my point would be not to immediately write off a home solely because the schools do not have the highest ratings.

Go to the Fairfax County Public Schools website Fairfax County Public Schools then go to the schools and centers tab. This page allows you to search by pyramid. A pyramid flows to a high school. If you select search by pyramid, you will get a combo box of all the high schools. When you select a high school it will show you all the schools that feed into that high school. Each school lists its address has a map, a link to the school website...

I was your typical "didn't try very hard" student, but the education was good and the area is very safe and kid friendly. There are honors programs, etc if your kids are so inclined.
I concur. I live in Burke, went to Lake Braddock, NOVA, GMU. Good schools, and Lake Braddock was renovated in 2007. Houses in Burke and Burke Centre are around 25-30 years old for the most part. Decent Transit options (VRE, Fairfax Commuter, Metrobus, nearby metro, etc.)

I would recommend avoiding West Springfield HS because of the fact that it is in desperate need of renovation (has been brought up in the local news in the past 5 years). Lake Braddock has AP and honors courses. Robinson has IB (I believe?).

I agree with the bit about Burke, but disagree with the advice to avoid West Springfield HS. Yes, it needs to be renovated, and it will be within the next several years. But it's an excellent school (runs neck and neck with Lake Braddock every year) and the renovations, while a pain in the neck, won't interfere with the quality of the education. One of the main differences between West Springfield and Lake Braddock is that Lake Braddock is a secondary school (grades 7-12), so it is huge -- over 4000 students, I believe. West Springfield is strictly a high school (grades 9-12) and has fewer than 2400 students. Some people don't like the idea of their kids, especially the younger ones, being in such a huge school. It wasn't important to us when we bought our house but it's something to be aware of.

I think W Springfield HS is better than Braddock. I come to the conclusion just based on the following website. I am new to VA anyway.

Well, as a West Springfield parent, I certainly wouldn't disagree with that! But in all fairness the two schools tend to toggle in the ratings -- one year one will edge out the other, then the next year it will be reversed. They are very similar schools (both AP rather than IB) and they draw from very similar populations. They are both excellent schools, that's the bottom line!

According to the site, W Springfield HS ranks #15, and Braddock ranks #67. Why all people says they are "same". To me (new to virginia), W Springfield is somewhat better.
