There are conservative counties in Oregon that are trying to separate and merge with Idaho instead. I can see this occurring in many states especially with big cities that are “blue” or whatever politics are causing the exodus’s. Maybe in New York they could merge Staten Island with New Jersey. Then merge conservative New Jersey counties with Florida haha
Same with a conservative county down in Atlanta, GA. They're trying to go on their own and not be part of Atlanta.
Which ones have you not visited? If you think NY is the most beautiful region perhaps that is because you grew up here and have that connection.
Hawaii, Alaska, western Washington State are real gems. California. Montana. Parts of Arizona. I might place Hawaii at the top of the list for beauty.
I live in Hawaii now and it truly is a beautiful state.
The most beautiful state I've visited, however, might be Michigan. Specifically, northern Michigan (right before the UP area . . . I'm thinking of Traverse City, Petoskey, Harbor Springs, etc.). I remained wowed to this date at how beautiful the area is (at least in the summer time )
NY does remind me of that somewhat, which is why I find upstate NY to be very appealing.
To answer the OP, however, yes I believe that NY would be a red state (or at least more consistently purpose) without NYC. NYC is so lopsidedly Democrat that it eliminates the otherwise GOP advantage throughout the rest of the state.
NJ is pretty leftist and their gun laws are even worse than NY. They even pretend that LEOSA doesn't exist and have their own version of it that requires you to qual twice a year. Plus no hollow points so that stockpile you surely have is worthless outside of a shtf scenario. I say go to PA instead.
and thank god for NJ strong gun laws. i'd shudder if we become like PA. we do NOT need more fricking guns!!!!!
Moved from Nassau County to Hamburg ( south of Buffalo) 5 years ago and I dont feel like I'm missing much. Live in a safe community with good schools, decent restaurants, low traffic, affordable housing prices and reasonable property taxes ( for New York State). I wouldn't say by any stretch that there is "nothing here". That is a perception that downstaters have that never made sense to me. I have hiking, skiing, the beach, professional sports, theater, casinos, museums, etc all within a 30 minute drive of my house. The only real negative here is the winters, which I'm not going to sugarcoat. However that's what February trips to Florida are for. Come on up and explore the "nothing" up here. There are definitely some hidden gems.
You came from Long Island, so you were used to a more quiet environment. If you live in NYC (even the outer boroughs like I do in Queens) being Upstate is different. My parents would send me Upstate sometimes during the summer to a summer camp. I was too young to remember which, but we visited farms and such and had fresh cow's milk. That I do remember. I frequented a number of places Upstate during my college years in part to visit friends. We had friends up in Montréal. Saw "a perfect circle" up there.
The "Downtowns" Upstate are smaller (lol). You're either into nature, drinking or going to another larger City to have some sort of real culture and nightlife. Slower pace of life for sure and it's probably why I have never wanted to live in the heart of any City even when I have lived outside of the US. I have always opted for areas near the City but more quiet residential areas away from the hustle.
Upstate used to be much redder when more people lived up there. Those with the means to leave left for better opportunities like myself. People also forget there was a time when NYS wasn't deep blue; when the Rust Belt was known as the Manufacturing belt upstate actually had a huge say in Albany.
