We're moving to Hermitage from Florida Debating about bringing our kayaks or selling them. Does anyone kayak the Cumberland River or Stones River? Any lakes worth kayaking?

And thank you to all that have posted here and various other cities in the Southeast. We narrowed our search, and bought a house in last week. Moving in March

If you want white water kayak you will have to go further east or North as the Cumberland winds back into KY. Cumberland Falls state park in KY is a must see.

You can kayak Old Hickory & Percy Priest lakes all you want. Not sure if there is a boat ramp from the dam into the Cumberland. There are greenway trails you can investigate.

Plenty of guided boat tour rentals from Shelby Bottoms to downtown at Nissan stadium. On the river itself you have to watch for commercial barge traffic + the General Jackson showboat. This is slow river almost lake like kayak.

There are more opportunities downstream from Nashville. Clarksville calls them blueways. They have parks with boat ramps. Further downstream you get to the Land Between the Lakes that is a natural forest. As you can guess the land is between the Cumberland and the Tennessee. There is a little canal near Barkley Dam connecting the Cumberland & the Tennessee near Paducah.

Moving in in March may be a bit late to see eagles in Reelfoot Lake. This is northwest TN almost on the Mississippi river. Nice big lake for kayak.

Oh yes, there is no shortage of kayaking around here. A little over an hour east of you is the Cookeville area which is ground zero for kayaking in Middle Tennessee. There are several kayak shops in downtown Cookeville, and a former Olympic kayaker loved the area so much that he moved here, opened a kayak factory here and tests them on our rivers and lakes (Jackson Kayak). Center Hill Lake has been host to several kayak championships including last year's international kayak fishing tournament.

If you're feeling a little adventurous here's some kayaking on the Caney Fork which is just south of Cookeville:

Best in the state is actually in southern Tn - The Ocoee where the Olympic course was used. That's class IV on the upper portion. The middle and lower are almost all rafters.
