This is one of the most remarkable "repurposing" projects for a religious building I've ever heard of.
In the city of Poznan, Poland, the large Jewish temple, dedicated in 1907, was converted in 1940 into a swimming pool for use by the invading German Wehrmacht soldiers. The building still is used for that purpose today.

I don't know of any other cases (in Europe, at least) in which a minority group's house of worship was converted into a recreational center for use by the authorities who had politically disenfranchised and exterminated that minority group. And I think the photos of the repurposed building are striking for that reason.
On the other hand, there are many cases in history in which a house of worship used by those of a particular religion was "repurposed" (under duress or not) for use also as a house of worship for a different religion.
I hate to see building with cultural histories being turned into office buildings or other commercial uses, but I also hate to see building fall into disrepair when the sheep no longer come to church and the organizations quit maintaining the buildings. I have seen this happen even in the south. The conversion to homes or condos seems to be popular in our area. I saw one Catholic Church in coastal NC turned into a nice house. Bigger than I would want, but it had character and was sure different from the neighbor’s house.
I've been seeing a lot of old buildings without any further useful purpose being turned into rather nice apartments...warehouses, factories, cinemas, churches..
In our little town, a local S. Baptist Church recently converted an ex-body shop (i,e,: auto repair) into their new church!
Now that's creative! "Fixing people's little spiritual dings and dents!" "Bondo for Jesus!" "Had a little mental fender-bender? We can repaint your soul for only nindee nine, nindee-nine!"
OMG that was so wrong. Glad I got a sense of humor
