The original post does not seem unreasonable, but then again I have not heard great things about Fresno and that property crime and drug use are absolutely rampant.

500k would get you about 2.5-3k square feet here in central MD....depending on the school district. And while we have some of the same crime and QOL issues, most of that is confined only to specific neighborhoods in the city. Out in the suburbs there is a lot of pressure on police and local politicians to not let that nonsense infiltrate into the counties too much.
