Now I know why I often avoided the census and tried obituaries, city directories and many other souces.

Why? frustration

In the coming weeks I'll be posting a very difficult search for descendants of a member of the military who died in 1944. I thought I'd start on the easy end which is the composition of the family between 1910 and 1940. Nothing came up on those four census via Family Search.
I'm too old to beat my head against the wall. Maybe someone here would like to toss the names around.

I'd like to stick to these names and locate their whereabouts before 1940.

Metta Malinoff - female - birth place and birth date unknown.
Jacob Cook - male - birth place and birth date unknown.
Marriage (or common law marriage) between Metta and Jacob (marriage date and location unknown)
Harry (middle initial might be W) Cook - son born to Metta & Jacob 1915 (birth place unknown)
Ernest Cook - son (estimated birth date 1916-1919) - birth place unknown.
Esther Cook - daughter (middle initial might be S) - (estimated birth date 1918-1921) - birth place unknown.
Possible locations: Detroit MI and/or Hazel Park, MI (dates of residency in those cities is unknown).

The hope early on is to locate obituaries for Metta and Jacob. Addresses where they lived.
Thanks.

I just saw your image.

Meta's (Metta) spouse was Jacob (John ??) Cook (Cooke) and their first born (Harry W.) and as far as I know was born in 1915. That would put his mother at the time of his birth at age 19 if the death certificate is the right Meta and it may be pending further.

Good!

I have confirmed that John was Mr. Cook's Ellis Island name.

As far as "children Ernest" I don't see that. Also the death certificate shows Meta's birth as 1896.

I think my library has Ancestry for free and I'll try to check there over the next 1-2 weeks.
-------------
Looking for (and we can only go by the data we have)

John (Jacob) Cook (middle initial or name not known)
death records
all addresses from 1914 up to his year of death
obituary

Meta Cook
all addresses between 1914 and 1931
obituary

Ernest Cook son (middle initial or name not known)
death records
all addresses from 1920 and up to his year of death
obituary (names and locations of his kids or grand kids or great grand kids)
----------
I'm working on this with limited sources (some are international resources) so update times may vary widely.
Thanks to anyone who may help.

Howard,
Yes, get access to Ancestry asap. Someone with screen name of drmomma789 has listed a Malinoff family tree going back to 1850 Russia, and extensive info on Meta Cook & family

Link is https://www.ancestry.com/family-tree...=successSource

or http://tinyurl.com/466svzvh

BTW. it appears that several unrelated "Meta Cook"s exist

The censuses are sort of a cornerstone of genealogy records, you're only making it more difficult for yourself by not using them. Depending on the situation, they may be difficult to find but that is not inherently so. And there's nothing wrong with FamilySearch either - I put Jacob Cook and spouse Metta Malinoff into FS's search engine and the top result is their marriage record, which gives you their marriage details, parents names, and their birth details.

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:N3PD-RQX

Name Jacob Cooke
Sex Male
Age 28y
Birth Date 1887
Birthplace England
Father's Name Thos
Mother's Name Sarah Rossater
Spouse's Name Meta Malinoff
Spouse's Sex Female
Spouse's Age 21y
Spouse's Birth Date 1894
Spouse's Birthplace Michigan
Spouse's Father's Name Louis
Spouse's Mother's Name Esther
Event Type Marriage
Event Date 21 Mar 1915
Event Place Detroit, Wayne, Michigan
Event Place (Original) Detroit, Wayne, Michigan
Reference v 5 p 132 rn 115387

With that info, Metta can be fairly easily found on the 1910 census as Mattie, parents names and birth details match the marriage record: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:ML5Z-F69

Here is Metta in 1900 recorded as "Minnie": https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MSMX-LWH

A brief look didn't find Jacob on censuses before his marriage but since he's an immigrant, it's possible he arrived after the 1910 census. As for after his marriage, it looks like he is recorded as John, not Jacob, ont he 1920 census, and Metta is recorded as "Nata" - but the children's names are correct and so are all the other details so I'm confident this is them: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MZWD-CKY

Thank you for your help and multiple mis-spellings doomed my search on FS last week.
I've passed all of this to the nephew of one of Meta's kids. This will eventually become a military and international search once all stones in MI and IL have been turned over.
