Hello everyone!

Any suggestions for quaint walkable towns within about an hours drive of Chambersburg?

Thanks!

I guess you would be looking around the Mason-Dixon Line in Washington and Frederick Counties. Smithsburg, Emmitsburg, and Thurmont are the three that jump to mind. Thurmont is the largest and has a bit of gravity to it as a town, different neighborhoods, some commercial development, but still a walkable downtown. Smithsburg is smaller but similarly has basic shopping close outside of town. Emmitsburg is small, and the last time I was there (10-15 years ago) you would have had to drive to around Thurmont to get groceries.

What else are you looking for in terms of price, schools, community feel, etc.?

So sorry, I should have been clearer. We are only looking to visit and go camping for a weekend!

Oh. Well camping all around those parts. I guess if you wanted a day trip when hiking then Thurmont would offer the most of those three, but really Frederick, a much bigger town/small city, may be more what you are looking for as a tourist.

I mean whatever town you choose would work if you want to go camping. Cunningham Falls State Park abuts them all. It's actually a really nice park. Not sure when you're going, but if its warmer, they have a decent swimming beach on a lake there too with bathroom facilities. And plenty of trails to/from. Summer the beach gets pretty crowded, but that's usually not a problem unless you want to get a pavilion which get snatched up early.

As for town to go in for meals and walking, I find Emmitsburg to have a nicer aesthetic (and truth be told on the shortlist to move to if my job ever goes full remote) and definitely quaint. Thurmont is not bad either, just always felt more run down to me.

If you're into a nice afternoon activity, and like wine (or even just tolerate it), the Red Heifer Winery is a really relaxed place to enjoy nice weather and share a bottle.
